Trina was a highly regarded medical scientist working on research to fight breast cancer. In the prime of her life she was knocked down by a debilitating stroke that left her in a wheelchair, paralysed on her left side.
After four months in hospital, she was moved into an aged care facility where she lived a lonely existence.
“I went from being a scientist to a place where there was very little stimulus; it was miserable.”
When she was given placement in Youngcare’s Wooloowin Share House in Brisbane, with three other young people with high care needs she felt like she had “won the lottery”.
“It’s been a breath of fresh air to come to a place where I’m encouraged to be independent,” she said.
Five years on and Trina is truly living the young life she deserves. She is a National Champion at Boccia and has plenty of creative stimulation to do beautiful artwork.
