What is the #YOURCAKE Challenge?
The #YOURCAKE Challenge is a community baking and fundraising challenge for Youngcare. In celebration of Youngcare’s 15th Birthday and The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book’s 40th Anniversary we are challenging Australians to bake one of the iconic cakes to raise much needed funds for young people with high care needs.
How much does it cost to participate?
It’s completely free to register and participate in the #YOURCAKE Challenge. You can sign up here and show off your incredible baking and decorative skills!
When and where is the #YOURCAKE Challenge?
The #YOURCAKE Challenge is a virtual challenge event which runs from Saturday, 29 August to and including Sunday, 6 September 2020. You decide when to complete your challenge either with workmates, at school, at home with friends and family or in your community.
What do I have to do?
Register here, select a cake from The Australian Women’s Weekly Children’s Birthday Cake Book and connect with you friends, family and networks for donations.
Where can I find a cake recipe?
We hare recipes for 6 of the iconic cakes within the Resources section, further recipes are found here or purchase your very own hardcopy of the 40th Anniversary edition at www.awwcookbooks.com.au. A percentage of the proceeds from every book sold is being donated to Youngcare.
What support will I receive?
Once you register you will be guided through steps to set up your fundraising page to share with your friends and family to receive donations. You will be emailed fundraising tips throughout your fundraising journey and the ‘Resources’ section of the website has everything you need to get started, including social media digital imagery, posters and theming accessories. In addition, you’re welcome to get in touch with the Youngcare team for help and support by calling 07 3041 3400 or email fundraising@youngcare.com.au with any queries.
What are some good fundraising tips?
o Explain to your supporters why you’ve committed to doing the #YOURCAKE Challenge to support young people with high care needs. If you have a story – share it!
o Make sure you upload a profile photo to your page. It makes your page more authentic and helps people feel more connected to you and the #YOURCAKE Challenge.
o Be the first to donate to your page. This shows your commitment and is setting the benchmark for family and friends who come to your page to make a donation.
o Share your page and ask people to support you via email and social media!
o Make sure you contact all your potential supporters and tell them about your #YOURCAKE Challenge. In addition to close friends and family, don’t forget to contact any other groups you may have connections with including current and former colleagues, old school and university friends and members of sporting clubs and community groups.
o Thank your donors! Let your supporters know that their donation has been noticed and appreciated.
o Don’t set your target too low! You may be surprised by how deep your supporters will dig to help you get across the line to reach your goal. If you’re close to reaching your target or have achieved it – increase it!
o Don’t be afraid to ask more than once, many of us mean to donate but sometimes life gets in the way and we forget. It usually takes more than one round of asking to nudge everyone into action, so don’t feel embarrassed about asking people again. You’re doing a great thing, of course your friends and family want to support you!
o Don’t stop fundraising when the #YOURCAKE Challenge finishes. A surprising number of donations are received after the event has finished, so don’t’ stop asking! Update your fundraising page and social media with some great photos of your #YOURCAKE creation and thank all your supporters!
Do I have to wait until the #YOURCAKE Challenge period to starting fundraising?
Definitely not! You’re encouraged to engage with your family and friends to start fundraising as soon as you register :)
Can I create a School, Workplace or Community Group Team?
You sure can! Team pages are a great way to fundraise with other people and show your collective effort. Once you have created your supporter page, you can access the team options by clicking 'edit page' in the bottom left hand corner of your screen. Select 'Team' and then ‘Create a team’, choose a name for your team and continue to create your team page.
Where do the donations go?
Currently, there are over 5,600 young people being left behind in residential aged care, simply because there is nowhere else for them to go. Youngcare is working hard to change this by providing fully accessible and age-appropriate living spaces, grants for equipment and home modifications and support through a national phone line. Your donation will go to the area of greatest need to provide choice, independence and dignity for young people with disabilities. Detailed information on Youngcare’s support services can be found at www.youngcare.com.au
What is Everyday Hero and how do I use it?
Everydayhero is an online fundraising platform which you can use to share your progress and collect donations. Your fundraising page will be set up automatically when you register. You can update your personal page at any time, add pictures or videos and share these with your friends, family and social networks. Supporters can donate monies online and receive a tax-deductible receipt for donations of $2 and over directly to their nominated email address.
How can I get members to join my created ‘Team Page’?
All your team members need to do is create a page of their own and then access the team options by clicking 'edit page' in the bottom left hand corner of their screen. Then they need to select 'Team' and then ‘Join a team’, search for your team name and click 'Join team'.
How do I join an existing ‘Team Page’?
From your supporter page, click 'edit page' in the bottom left hand corner of your screen. Select 'Team' and then ‘Join a team’, search for the existing team name and click 'Join team'.
Do my donors get a tax-deductible receipt?
Yes, when your donor donates $2 and over through your Everyday Hero page, a tax-deductible receipt will be generated and emailed directly to their nominated email address.
